Gilani Announces Rs 3bn Special Grant For Balochistan

ISLAMABAD :Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday announced a special grant of Rs. 3 billion for Balochistan from his discretionary funds to help the province finalize preparation of its development budget. He was presiding over a high-level meeting to deliberate on the fiscal problems being faced by Balochistan. This grant is in addition to the Rs. 64 crore allocated by the Prime Minister last week for electrification of Noshki and Dalbandin, Rs.34 crores for supply of gas to Sohrab, and Rs. 36 crore for supply of gas to Noshki under the Peoples Works Programme. Prime Minister Gilani told the delegation that international assistance is being sought for new small dams in remote areas. Out of the five new dams proposed to be constructed in the country at a total cost of Rs. 250 billion, four will be built in Balochistan, he said. Chief Minister Balochistan, Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani, gave an overview of the financial constraints facing Balochistan while the Finance Minister, Balochistan gave a comprehensive briefing about the province’s economic problems. The Chief Minister and the Finance Minister thanked the Prime Minister for chairing the first meeting of its kind in the history of the country to deliberate on problems of Balochistan. Prime Minister Gilani also formed a Committee headed by Law Minister Farooq H. Naik to look into the Balochistan government’s demands pertaining to gas development surcharge and royalty rates, and directed it to submit its report to him by Wednesday. Secretary Establishment, Secretary Petroleum, Secretary Finance and Principle Secretary to the Prime Minister are members of this Committee. He said that Balochistan is rich in resources and there is no reason why it cannot be brought at par with other parts of the country. Share
