Rain enables SNGPL to win Nissar Trophy By by our correspondent 9/19/2008 DELHI: Overnight rain ruled out any play on the fourth and final day of the annual Mohammad Nissar Trophy match, and Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) became the first team from Pakistan in three attempts to claim the title, by virtue of a first innings lead over Delhi here at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Thursday. After they faced a 132 runs first innings deficit, Delhi had hit back strongly in their second outing as they ran up a total of 516 for four wickets. This gave them a big lead of 384 runs, but interruptions by rain, bad light and a total washout on the last day meant that SNGPL took full advantage of the situation that arose. Delhi’s poor batting performance on the first day on Monday proved to be their undoing, after they had been dismissed for just 134 runs. SNGPL pace bowler Imran Ali from Lahore had impeccable bowling figures of six wickets for 52 runs that included a hat-trick. SNGPL then almost doubled that score with their reply of 266 all out. Skipper Virender Sehwag simply relished watching the grand 385-run second-wicket partnership between century-makers Aakash Chopra (182) and Virat Kohli (197) and appeared to have ignored plans to make a timely declaration. As a result, much time was consumed on the third day especially and, in case of more rain — which did actually arrive, SNGPL were the expected winners on first innings result. Delhi would have had to bowl the visitors out if they wanted the match to tilt their way. Rain had left the outfield and playing area soggy and the umpires finally called off play at 1.30 pm yesterday after inspecting the conditions on three occasions. The two previous editions of the Mohammad Nissar Trophy, instituted in 2006 as an annual encounter between the national cricket champions of India and Pakistan, had been won by Indian teams — Uttar Pradesh in 2006 and Mumbai in 2007. Scores: Delhi 134 (V Kohli 52, M Manhas 49; Imran ASli 6-52) and 516-4 (A Chopra 182, V Kohli 197). SNGPL 266 (Umar Akmal 58, Khurram Shahzad 66). Match drawn, but SNGPL won on first innings lead.
