Venezuela summons US ambassador over violation of its airspace CARACAS: Venezuela has denounced an alleged violation of its airspace by an American military aircraft and has summoned the U.S. ambassador to explain the incident occurred on Saturday. Venezuelan Defense Minister Gen. Gustavo Rangel Briceno told a news conference Monday that the U.S. Navy plane flew over the Caribbean island of La Orchila and another Venezuelan island before turning back. He said proof of the conversation between ground control in Venezuela and the aircraft pilot was recorded. Briceno termed the incident "the latest step in a series of provocations" by the US. The U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Robin Holzhauer said that the United States is looking into "any possible accidental incursion of Venezuelan airspace." Venezuelan officials have also expressed concern about an alleged crossing of the Venezuelan border by Colombian troops. Colombia's defense minister has denied the allegation.
