China earthquake: Villagers stranded for 16 days rescued

Forty villagers and miners stranded for 16 days on a remote mountainside by the Sichuan earthquake have been plucked to safety by helicopter. They had eaten nothing but rice mixed with local wild herbs since the earthquake cut off the village of Yangjiagou on May 12. Eight of the rescued were mining workers who had taken refuge in a cave, while five more were trapped in a phosphorus mine. Their late rescue demonstrated the difficulties authorities have faced reaching all those affected by the quake.
