Govt to give Rs325b on power, petrol, wheat

ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar Sunday said the government will offer Rs325 billion as subsidy from the federal budget for petroleum, electricity and wheat. According to a report by senior journalist Hanif Khalid, the federal minister said an estimate of Rs144 billion has been calculated for wheat purchasing and Rs150 billion has been estimated for petroleum and its products and electricity each. According to sources, the former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz held back the raise in petroleum prices the whole year to get a win for Pakistan Muslim League (Q) in general elections. Besides, the former government did not increase the power tariffs on time and did not undertake any step to stem the power stealth and line loss. They did not receive the electricity arrears of over Rs80 billion from FATA and Karachi, for which the Gilani government will have to pay a subsidy of Rs100 to 150 billion to Karachi Electric Supply Corporation and Wapda within one and half months.
