Punjab Assembly passes pro-media resolution

Amid media protest and boycott on fourth consecutive day, the Punjab Assembly during its proceedings on Tuesday passed a resolution recognizing and appreciating the media’s role for restoration of democracy and strengthening of the democratic institutions of the country. According to sources, the Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah Khan presented the resolution in the house, which resumed its sitting two hours beyond its scheduled time at 10:00 am with Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan.

During the course of presentation of the resolution, the Opposition MPA Amir Sultan Cheema pointed out the quorum, but the chair did not pay any heed to his objection, they said, asserting that later, Mr. Cheema went to the Speaker and started thumping his (speaker) table and said “the house is lacking the required strength to present the resolution.” This attitude on the part of Q-Leaguer irked the Speaker, who banned his entry into the house for 15 days, besides suspending his membership, they added.
