x P M Musharraf should face the music in Pakistan like a man

Islamabad, Aug.19 (ANI): A columnist with Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper has said that former president general Pervez Musharraf should be man enough to come back to Pakistan and face the music for his alleged misdemeanours while in power. According to Kamran Shafi, it is extremely critical that a general of an army whose brass hats consider Pakistan their inherited fiefdom, is tried, and hopefully convicted for rebellion against an elected government, and sentenced to a term in prison like any other person who has violated the law. “My advice to the `Commando’ (as Musharraf has been known) will be to come back to the country and face the music like a man. He has badmouthed ZAB (Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto) much, and far too frequently when he ruled the roost, once going to the extent of calling him ‘the worst thing to have happened to Pakistan’! Well, let us see if he is half the man that Bhutto was,” says Shafi in his article for the paper. He further goes on to say that Pakistanis and the international community must not forget the tribulations of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who though elected, was thrown out of office by the army on the orders of Musharraf and his supporters, treated quite disgracefully, locked up in Attock Fort before being taken in shackles and chains to Karachi to stand trial for that so-called hijacking which many today say was a fraud played out by the ‘agencies’ to provide grounds for the removal of a constitutional government. Sharif, he says attempted to come back to Pakistan (from Saudi Arabia) after being expressly allowed by the Supreme Court, but was sent back most shamefully and in disgraceful fashion.

Sharukh Says he will cut back on US visits

NEW DELHI - Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said Tuesday he will cut back on visits to the United States, especially with his family, after he was questioned by immigration officials at a New York-area airport. Khan was taken aside at Newark's Liberty International Airport on Friday for what officials said was routine questioning. They denied he was formally detained, saying the incident lasted barely more than an hour and was prolonged only because his bag had been lost by the airline. But the questioning set off outrage in India, where politicians, sports celebrities and film stars regularly receive VIP treatment at airports. Angry fans burned a U.S. flag and protested what they saw as ill-treatment of a beloved star, and politicians called for an investigation. The Muslim actor was promoting his latest film, "My Name is Khan," about racial profiling after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Khan told reporters Tuesday after returning to Mumbai that the incident had been "blown out of proportion." But he said the questioning — which included requests for the names of people who could vouch for him — embarrassed him.

Disarmament negotiations have been stalled since 1996 but a thaw in US-Russia relations following Barack Obama’s arrival in the White House, and a renewed superpower pledge to back the separate Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, generated fresh momentum.

Pakistan asks accusers to respect ICC all-clear

KARACHI — Pakistan on Tuesday urged those who made accusations of match-fixing to keep quiet after the game's governing body cleared the national team of any wrongdoing on their tour of Sri Lanka. The International Cricket Council (ICC) Monday announced that its Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) found nothing against Pakistan players after reports bookmakers tried to contact them in a team hotel in Sri Lanka. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt said the ICC announcement should silence the accusers. "We have a zero tolerance towards corruption and we are relieved to learn that no untoward act was committed," Butt said in a statement. "This announcement by the ICC should also silence those who have been vociferous in their baseless accusation but remain quiet when it comes to producing evidence," said Butt. The Pakistani team fell under suspicion after a report in the local media this month alleged bookmakers were seen trying to make contact with players in their Colombo hotel during the second Test against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan emergency judges removed

Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari has ordered the suspension of judges appointed under emergency rule in 2007. The move comes after the Supreme Court ruled that the emergency declared by former President Pervez Musharraf had been illegal and unconstitutional. The court ruling means 76 judges are barred from carrying out their duties. A decision on their future will be made by the Supreme Judicial Council, the country's highest judicial regulatory body. Hearings are due next week. President Musharraf sacked judges who refused to take an oath of loyalty under the 3 November 2007 emergency rule. They have since been reinstated and include Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. His suspension earlier that year started the protest movement that ended with Mr Musharraf being driven from office. He eventually had to end emergency rule and hold general elections which led to the defeat of his political allies in February 2008. Mr Musharraf was finally forced to resign in August 2008. He has argued that his actions were necessary to combat militancy.
